The second mountaineering sequence had my mouth hanging open and loudly saying "holy shit!"However, the last act and maybe the second half of the second act is where things turn sloppy. Plot holes, irritating directorial tics calm down with the slow motion, man! Who are you, Zack Snyder?, and a complete change of setting make the second half of the film completely uninteresting and I couldn't wait for it to a shame, had the film kept up with the mountaineering setting and the well put together set pieces it could have been something special, but instead it's just wasted potential. This was very different to what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed the storyline! It’s not all about heights, it’s actually about so much more!First off, I loved Melissa George as Alison - I think she’s great in 30 Days of Night so it’s definitely nice seeing her in something else! I also was not expecting where the storyline ended up, but it was very interesting! I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but I recommend going in blind! So much more unsettling that way!I really enjoyed this movie! So much more complicated than I expected, plus I loved the performances + characters! Definitely worth checking out! This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. A perfectly decent adventure thriller ruined by the decision to throw in some bullshit about Serbian war criminals near the end and an attempt at a fucking cares. It was more than enjoyable to that point so I don't know what Julian Gilbey was thinking of with the final third of this. All it needed was more falling off cliffs and running about and people being horribly injured and Melissa George having a fight with Sean Harris. Gilbey absolutely blew it with that point, it was more than diverting. Especially when somebody starts lobbing rocks at George, drawing an audible "OOHFUCK!" out of me when one hit her. By the end any audibles coming out of me were more along the lines of "OOH FUCK OFF!" Watched on Amazon Prime I actually thought I'd seen this movie before. The beginning even seemed familiar, but bit by bit the story hit hooks I couldn't remember. After half an hour I checked and found out that I had confused it with the film High Lane. High Lane was quite good. A Lonely Place To Die is unfortunately a bit mixed. In any case, you can see the sense of staging of the makers and a certain feeling for tension. Especially the first 45 minutes are marked by great nature shots of the Scottish Highlands. While the beginning gives us hope for a thrilling survival mountaineering movie, the story quickly develops into a classic the introduction of… 5 climbers in the Scottish highlands stumble across an abducted girl buried in a small wooden chamber, the group try and make there way to safety but are soon pursued by the vicious kidnappers. The movie starts of with a pretty intense climbing sequence as we are introduced to the characters and although the script in general is pretty good at this stage some of the dialogue is a little bit clunky. As the movie progresses it turns into a suspenseful chase through some of the most unforgiving countryside in Scotland. The cast are all pretty good but special mention must go to chief villain Sean Harris who manages to steal every scene he is in with just an ice cold stare. The film is shot in the Scottish highlands and credit must also go to the cinematographer who captures the beauty of the scenery while also setting the isolated atmosphere of the film. Oh dear. Yet another of these 'brutal thrillers' that starts so well before absolutely falling off a cliff pun very much intended, you're welcome. Sean Harris' villain is such an evil piece of work in this, but he ends up as just a cog in the bigger wheel of some network of baddies - it demeaned his menace having bigger fish arrive. Shame really as I'd heard good things about it. A Lonely Place to Die is too good to be labelled as a misfire, but that final half our or so, comes pretty close to ruining it. The fact that it starts with such a confident, breathless, level of suspense, its such a shame that it couldn't be maintained throughout. It looks incredible. The location photography makes Scotland look like it should be the location for every film from now enjoyable, if paper thin and you only ever see the first half an hour of this, you have still got your money's worth. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Well this starts very well indeed but ultimately it doesn't capitalise on its real success of this movie is its ability to create some truly tense and gripping moments, and - as someone who has no head for heights - the climbing scenes and stuntwork was bone crunchingly, palm sweatingly immediately connected with Kate Magowen's character and bought into her immediate rapport and desire to mother the infant girl the climbers rescue. It was an nice emotive connection the film benefited from, so it was a huge shame she was killed off so suddenly. By that stage in the movie you knew the heroes where to be picked off one by one and Sean Harris as… A satisfying chase film that's undercut by a final act that decides to introduce a bunch of new elements. Don't do that filmmakers! If you're making a chase film, don't cut away from the chasing! Everything with Melissa George racing down a mountain while being hunted by trigger happy psychos is great. Sean Harris talking about how evil he is kills the pace dead. Director Julian Gilbey really loves mountain climbing. When you find a foreign girl in an underground chamber and end up on the wrong side of the cross hairs. Tough luck for our mountaineers, who now have to run for their lives in the Scottish Highlands. Beautiful scenery and tight situations in a film that tries really hard, perhaps a little too hard. The underwater footage when someone falls into a river for instance. Looks great, but feels like it belongs in a different movie. Slow motions and other visual trickery tend to be counterproductive, the score is so generic that it doesn't have any effect at all and towards the end the screenplay goes a little overboard as well. I like Karel Roden, but did this film really need a couple of Eastern European mobsters? It was better off in the wilderness. Less is more, I guess. I need to stop letting my family pick what film we watch the first half of the movie is amazing and then it slowly gets not so great and it’s a shame because the potential it had !!!!!
